On 23 May, the European Environment Agency (EEA) and European Commission will publish their annual report on bathing water. The report provides a comprehensive overview of the quality of bathing water in EU Member States throughout the 2011 bathing season, so swimmers can find areas where water quality is expected to be good during 2012.
Bathing water in Europe needs to comply with standards set in the EU's 2006 Bathing Water Directive. This report brings together water quality data from more than 22,000 designated bathing waters across Europe, approximately 70 % of them coastal sites and the remainder inland. Sites are classified as compliant with mandatory EU values, compliant with the more stringent guide values, or non-compliant.
A report on bathing water quality in all 27 EU Member States will be released, with printed versions in English, French and German. Individual Member State reports will also be available in English, on the Internet.
IP and report will be available on the day.
