The 2012 conference will be co-organised by the European Commission's Directorate-General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, the Swedish Ministry of Enterprise, Energy and Communications, the Västra Götaland region and the city of Gothenburg.
The theme of this year's edition is 'Sustainable growth from the oceans, seas and coasts: Blue growth'.
The European Commissioner for maritime affairs and fisheries Maria Damanaki will pronounce a welcome address and a keynote speech. Keynote speeches by Commissioners Máire Geoghegan-Quinn (research, innovation and science) and Cecilia Malmström (home affairs) are to be confirmed.
The European maritime day is celebrated annually on 20 May since 2008. The purpose is to highlight the importance of seas and oceans and the challenges facing maritime regions and sectors. Several events are organised across Europe, and a main event is held in one place, in the form of a high level meeting and a stakeholder conference.
After Brussels 2008, Rome 2009, Gijon 2010 and Gdansk 2011, the 2012 edition will be organised in Gothenburg, Västra Götaland, Sweden – for the first time in Scandinavia and in the North Sea area.
