The Employment Committee is responsible for promoting the coordination of European Union (EU) countries employment and labour market policies.
The Committee's main tasks are to:
- follow the development of employment policies and the labour situation in EU countries;
- formulate opinions at the request of either the Council or the Commission or on its own initiative;
- assist the Council in its work on the European Employment Strategy and its instruments (Employment Guidelines, recommendations on the implementation of national employment policies, etc.).
The Committee also formulates opinions at the request of either the Council or the Commission or on its own initiative.
It is made up of two representatives of each Member State and two representatives of the Commission. It consults the social partners at European level in order to carry out its work successfully.
