Priorities in the short term:

  • draw up a national strategy for employment;
  • support the efforts of the social partners to ensure that they have the capacity to develop and implement the acquis, especially through bilateral social dialogue.

Priorities in the medium term:

  • set up appropriate structures relating to the labour market and jointly re-examine employment policies with a view to preparing to take part in coordination in the European Union;
  • bring into line labour law and health and safety at work legislation, especially by the rapid adoption of the framework Directive on the health and safety of workers;
  • pursue the establishment of an active social dialogue;
  • pursue the introduction of social protection;
  • apply the principle of equal opportunities between men and women;
  • adopt measures designed to bring public health standards up to Community level.

No progress has been made with these priorities.

Following the signing of the Accession Treaty on 16 April 2003, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia acceded to the European Union on 1 May 2004.
