Cyprus - Political Criteria

Short-term priorities:

• maximise efforts to support a settlement under the auspices of the UN.

Assessment (November 2001)

The Cypriot government took part in negotiations to sort out the situation facing the island. However, this was stopped following the unilateral retreat from negotiations by the Turkish community in November 2000.

Assessment (October 2002)

In January 2002 Mr Glafcos Clerides and Mr Rauf Denktash started a dialogue under the auspices of the UN to reach a political agreement. Since Cyprus has continued its efforts to reach a settlement on the division of the island, it can be said that the partnership priority has been complied with.

Assessment (November 2003)

Following the signing of the Accession Treaty on 16 April 2003, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia acceded to the European Union on 1 May 2004.
