Cyprus - Energy

Short-term priorities:

Assessment (November 2003)

Please refer to the fact sheets on the adoption of the Community acquis.

Medium-term priorities:

  • align oil-stock requirements;
  • incorporate the national regulatory energy objectives for emission control in power stations, use of unleaded petrol and use of low-sulphur diesel into the legal framework;
  • continue to improve energy efficiency;
  • prepare for the internal energy market, in particular as regards the directives on common rules for the electricity and gas markets.

Assessment (November 2001)

The priorities in the field of energy policy have only been met in part. The question of oil stocks, which must be increased in order to ensure security of supply, should be tackled as soon as possible. Cyprus has undertaken to implement the Directive concerning common rules for the internal electricity market by the date of accession. The monopoly of the national electricity company must be broken to permit alignment with the acquis. Additional efforts must also be made to improve energy efficiency.

Assessment (October 2002)

Cyprus has continued the alignment process regarding oil-stocks and has made progress in the actual constitution of stocks. It has continued to prepare for participation in the internal energy market, particularly with regard to the electricity Directive.

Cyprus has continued to develop the use of renewable energies and has addressed all the recommendations made in the Council Report on Nuclear Safety.

Assessment (November 2003)

Please refer to the fact sheets on the adoption of the Community acquis.

Following the signing of the Accession Treaty on 16 April 2003, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia acceded to the European Union on 1 May 2004.
