Cyprus - Environment

Short-term priorities:

  • transposing and enforcing the Directive on environmental impact assessment;
  • adopting a strategy and a detailed, directive-specific programme with a view to transposing, implementing and enforcing the European Union's acquis;
  • speeding up transposition, especially in the areas of water quality, waste management and air quality;
  • drawing up a plan for financing investment (directive-specific), based on an estimate of the cost of alignment and realistic financial sources.

Assessment (November 2001)

The law on environmental impact assessment entered into force in April 2001. The national programme for the adoption of the acquis has been completed. The alignment of legislation on water quality has almost finished. A waste management strategy has been adopted. The alignment of the acquis on air quality is continuing.

Assessment (October 2002)

Transposition of the waste acquis has continued with the Law on packaging waste, but further efforts are needed. A monitoring programme has been put into operation as part of the implementation of the Water Framework Directive. A draft law on water pollution control and two regulations on the limitation of water pollution from asbestos and the management of sewage sludge have been approved.

Assessment (November 2003)

Please refer to the fact sheets on the adoption of the Community acquis.

Medium-term priorities:

  • completing transposition;
  • continuing to boost institutional, administrative and monitoring capacities in order to guarantee environmental protection;
  • implementing a waste management strategy;
  • incorporating sustainable development principles into the formulation and implementation of all other sectoral policies.

Assessment (November 2001)

Cyprus has continued transposing legislation and reinforcing administrative capacity. The waste management strategy has been adopted, but alignment has not been completed in the field of hazardous waste. Legislation on recycling is being drafted. Efforts are being made to integrate sustainable development into the formulation of other policies, in particular agriculture and energy.

Assessment (October 2002)

Administrative and enforcement capacity is being stepped up. Regarding nature protection, a scheme has been approved to protect specific areas of the Akamas Peninsula.

Assessment (November 2003)

Please refer to the fact sheets on the adoption of the Community acquis.

Following the signing of the Accession Treaty on 16 April 2003, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia acceded to the European Union on 1 May 2004.
