The Bavarian State Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs, Family and Women, together with the Bavarian Seniors Association, has launched the 2nd consecutive edition of the Old People Awards, which recognise citizens over 65 years who stand out as role models and are an encouraging example in the fields of arts, sports, charity, society or economy.
The aim of the contest it to make society more aware of the exemplary achievements of elderly people and fight against stereotypes.
Citizens of Bavaria 65+ can participate in the contest submitting their application online before August 10th 2012. Bavarian citizens who are proud of any elderly neighbour or family member are also invited to submit applications in their name. A jury will select a male and a female winner for each administrative district of the state, awarding a total of 14 prizes.
Among the award winners last year there’s a 76-year-old marathon runner, a 74-year-old poet, a 72-year-old dance teacher and an 88-year-old soccer referee.
An exhibition with inspiring portraits of the 2011 winners taken by photographer Bernhard Kühmstedt has been produced and will tour the state throughout the European Year for Active Ageing and Solidarity between Generations.
