Estonia closes the European Year 2012 calling seniors to be more active in volunteering initiatives

The Estonian closing event of the European Year for Active Ageing and Solidarity between Generations 2012 took place on December 19th at the Radisson Blue Conference Centre in Tallinn with attendance of 150 participants.

The opening speech was delivered by popular singer and TV host Reet Linna, who is also a great-grandmother, who gave an overview of the major activities implemented this year in Estonia within the framework of the EY2012. Afterwards, Marten Lauri, from the Ministry of Home Affairs, took the floor to talk about volunteering and intergenerational solidarity in Estonia.

“Only 10% of the population in the country is involved in voluntary activities, but that number could be higher, and we have the potential. There is no need to wait for someone to call for your help: Take part of it today!”, said Mr. Lauri.

The Member of The Parliament Katrin Karisma-Krumm, who is also a singer and one of the European Year 2012 Ambassadors in Estonia, shared her thoughts about the mission she carried out during these months and talked about some of the active ageing and volunteering activities in which she participated.

Eha Topolev, from NGO Inkotuba, praised the success of this year’s Elderly Festival, and the Male Choir Teaduste Akadeemia offered a musical performance while a Christmas buffet was served to participants, who received the greetings of Father Christmas.

To close the cheerful event, participants were invited to the screening of the new film “A lady in Paris”, with Jeanne Moreau in the role of an elderly Estonian who doesn't want anyone to look after her.
