For 2012, the Flemish Council for Older People, the official advisory body of the Flemish Government on all matters concerning seniors, has chosen "Active Ageing and Solidarity between Generations" as this year's theme for Older People's Week in November. The aim is to raise awareness of the contribution of older people to society and also to promote active ageing.
Earlier in the year, the Council prepared a text about 'Active Ageing and solidarity between generations' and presented their vision on the occasion of the European Day for Solidarity between Generations on 27 April 2012. They also developed a methodology to stimulate local senior advisory boards to take action at local level.
The Council's new campaign "Life long Active Ageing" was presented on the 28th of September, on the occasion of the International Day for Older People, to which a total of 250 seniors, politicians and researchers were invited. The same month, the Council also prepared a brochure containing specific information and statistics about "Active ageing and solidarity between generations" which was published and distributed to all senior organisations in Flanders.
Each year, senior organisations organise Older People's Week during the third week of November in Flanders. On this occasion, from 19-25 November, the secretary of the Flemish Council for Older People as well as local senior organisations will be handing out the "Active ageing and solidarity between generations" brochure to the public. There will also be a wide variety of local activities organised by the local senior organisations.
