Besides the fitness programmes organised at the 19 day centres for the elderly where approximately 2,000 people attend, a few weeks ago the Government launched the St Vincent de Paul Residence (SVPR) FIT programme together with the Maltese Council for Sports. This programme targets the residents of St Vincent de Paul Residence and offers 24 fitness classes every four weeks in different parts of the Residence. Moreover the SWIM FIT programme was launched for those aged 60+ and this gives them the possibility to use facilities at the University of Malta’s pool.
This was made official on May 16th by Parliamentary Secretary for the Elderly and Community Care Mario Galea during the presentation of medals to the elderly who took part in the Sports Day organized by the staff of the Department of Elderly and Community Care and the Day Centres. This year the activity has grown in its importance since it is the European Year for Active Ageing and Solidarity between Generations.
600 senior citizens participated in the event and approximately 500 students attended the sports day for the elderly. Parliamentary Secretary Mario Galea congratulated the elderly for their participation in the event and encouraged all senior citizens to practice fitness exercises which contribute to leading a better and healthier life. Mario Galea also encouraged the attending students to appreciate all that the elderly do for society.
During the event, Mr. Galea also commented on Day Centres for the Elderly which have an important function in Malta given as they provide more than a meeting point for users. Day centres offer learning opportunities, occupational therapy and podology services. Podology services were recently introduced in a number of centres and this service will eventually be available in all of them.
