Throughout the European Year 2012, 10 municipalities within the province of Overijssel will implement various initiatives to create 1,000 new jobs for senior volunteers and support organizations to recruit older volunteers. The target group are seniors who have reached retirement age and those who have become involuntarily unemployed.
The participating municipalities have prepared a project to achieve this goal, with different initiatives. Some, for example, are organising volunteering fairs for seniors.
Ultimately, the idea is to create a series of networks in the province integrated by employers, education and volunteer centres, senior citizens' associations, women's organizations and the SWO's (Foundation for the Wellbeing of Senior Citizens). Together, these parties will try to find ways to encourage and/or retain volunteering among the elderly.
The underlying idea is the realization by seniors that volunteering has a positive impact on the quality of life. Volunteering helps reduce isolation and seniors maintain a social network. Besides, organizations seeking volunteers can use the life experiences, accumulated knowledge, skills and networks of the voluntary seniors.

Social quality is one of the core pillars of Overijsse's authorities road map for 2011-2015. Authorities are currently implmenting plans to improve the social environment, social interaction and civic participation in the province's municipalities.
