Crossroads Care CNL Homeshare scheme matches older householders, who need help and/or companionship with capable, reliable people looking for accommodation in the London area. The householder offers their spare room in exchange for 10 weekly hours of support – such as accessing the local community, cooking, cleaning, shopping and gardening – tasks that are agreed with support from the Homeshare team.

The scheme enables older householders to remain at home, preserving independence and receiving help with daily tasks and increasing social opportunities. The companionship and security benefits both parties, reducing isolation and loneliness, while reassuring family members who may not live close by. As many of the homesharers are younger people, the scheme also offers an opportunity to develop intergenerational solidarity, exchanging perspectives that each can offer the other. The Homeshare team provide an ongoing monitoring and reviewing role to ensure that the Homeshare arrangement runs smoothly, offering advice, support and information about other services where applicable.

Within the context of the European Year for Active Ageing, the Homeshare scheme expanded in 2012, offering its service to older people both in and outside of central London. The team has focussed on ensuring that the values and intent of the scheme has been communicated in terms of highlighting independence, intergenerational working and living through regular attendance at locally based events for older people. Improving the quality of the scheme has also been a 2012 goal, ensuring that those using the service have regular contact, support and advice. This has included increasing the working relationship with a range of statutory and voluntary sector organisations.

In February 2012, Crossroads Care CNL Homeshare was featured in the Guardian newspaper and on a BBC London Radio programme, highlighting the benefits of homesharing for both older householders and younger sharers in terms of finance, health, wellbeing and education.
