Association Cultures et Progrès (ACP) has launched an intergenerational forum dealing with East African diaspora in Belgium, in order to promote the dialogue between different immigrant generations in Wallonia and Brussels.
In the context of the European Year for Active Ageing and Solidarity between Generations, the initiative's link to Active Ageing is very strong given that half the participants in each group are elder mothers. These older women face many difficulties and one of the most important is their weak interaction with the Belgian community.
The purpose of the associations' activities is to stimulate the exchange of experience and discussion among the different generations of the East African Community, as well as social solidarity and social integration through the volunteering of the older people and youth of this community. Within these activities, the role of new technologies is crucial since they allow participants to master the new technologies of communication and interaction.
The association's initiative started in 10th March 2012 and will continue until October 2012. A partnership with three other associations brought together older mothers and young newcomers, so as to foster dialogue between immigrant generations and implement not only social and cultural activities, but also share experiences and critical analysis on common local issues. Further to the intergenerational forum, ACP's conclusions on immigrants' experiences in Brussels will contribute to elaborate a framework for a better inclusion of newcomers.
Through conferences held on 8 May in Brussels, 22 May in Namur and 5 upcoming workshops on various thematics (from IT skills and lifelong learning to administrative support), to enforce the abilities, cultural identity, language competences and other integration skills that are useful for the immigrant population, ACP will work towards establishing useful links between these communities and the local structures. In September, a final seminar will present the projects carried out by each group.
This project is supported by the Belgacom Foundation and the European Fund for the Integration of third country nationals.
