The Austrian Care & Support Award (Pflege- und Betreuungspreis) honours the commitment of all those persons who take care of old, sick and disabled people. The prize aims to highlight their commitment and contribute to promote projects and initiatives that may be transferred into other areas and serve as good practice examples.
Launched in 2008 by the NGO Volkshilfe, the annual prize is awarded every autumn and is now a reference in Austria and is given in two categories: Caregivers and Volunteers.
About 80% of those who are in need of care are attended by family members. Two thirds of those relatives are women. By 2030, the labour force participation rate of women between 45 and 64 will have increased a 20 per cent. Without the dedication of these people, who in many cases have a (full-time) job, the system of care and support in Austria would be impossible.
Volkshilfe, in cooperation with the Pensioners Association of Austria, also organises the Senior-friendly Community Award (Seniorenfreundliche Gemeinde), which is given every two years since 2004 to towns and cities throughout the country making outstanding contributions to improve the lives of the older generation.
Both awards receive the support of the Ministry of Labour, Social Affairs and Consumer Protection.
Volkshilfe is a non-profit, non-political and non-denominational organisation that plans, builds, operates and supports professional social and socio-medical institutions in Austria.
