Flat-sharing projects for seniors

In November 2003 the association Miteinander leben launched in Lagergasse, Graz, its first project of flat-sharing for seniors in Austria. After that, up to 16 other similar facilities have been inaugurated throughout Styria.

The concept of the project is to provide shared flats in the city’s centre to seniors and those who suffer from mental illness. The project aims increase the self-determination and social interaction of those living in the flat-sharing communities.

The freedom of self-determination combined with the feeling of security helps residents to reinforce their self-confidence. As a result, they participate in more social activities or go out of the house frequently.

The Styrian government helps low income retirees to finance the flat and the basic services in these houses.

The Miteinander leben received the 2012 Eurodiaconia Award for Active Ageing and Social Inclusion.
