Lippstadt: Stroll and Chat

The municipality of Lippstadt offers since 2011 the programme “Stroll and Chat”, in which senior representatives, charitable organizations and a network of walking patrons collaborate in order to offer elderly citizens with walking limitations the possibility the enjoy a nice walk along their neighbourhoods.

The walking patrons select a walking route that is well adapted to the participants, who may participate even if they use walkers or crutches.

At the end of the stroll, they all sit together at a neighbourhood coffee shop or at one of the participant charitable institutions, and enjoy a nice chat.

Walking patrons participate on a voluntary basis, and the service they offer to the seniors is free. They are prepared for the task with a mobile phone and information to help.

The overall aim of this initiative is to encourage regular exercise among the seniors and to help them make new friends and socialize while walking.

In 2012, the walks will be offered from May to October.

Estabilshed in 2009, the Office for Civic Engagement of the city of Lippstadt sees itself as a link between vulnerable people and non-profit organisations, associations, organizations and others who want to work with volunteers. Its aim is to improve social cohesion among generations and solidarity.
