Scientific studies show that physical activities improve the subjective feeling of health, motor abilities and memory performance of older adults.
Since August 2011 a special training for elderly people is given by Dr. Peter Emmermacher and Prof. Dr. Kerstin Witte at the Otto-von-Guericke University in Germany under the title "Fall prophylaxis and improvement of performance in learning and memory for elderly people by East Asian martial arts".
The initiative was motivated by the fact that many old people practice martial arts in Eastern Asian countries. Tests and researches have confirmed the improvement and preservation of balance, reaction time, muscle strength of legs and cognitive abilities among those who practice these sports at an elderly age.
The senior citizens who participate in this initiative train in two groups (beginners and advanced learners) for 60 minutes two times per week. They learn defence techniques, attacks and katas (pattern of defence-and-attack) as well as the related Japanese terms.
In the context of the European Year 2012, two test trainings will be offered to all interested senior citizens (63 years and older) on June 14th and 21st at the Sports Hall 2 (Zschokkestr, Magdeburg).
These classes are a collaborative project between the university’s Institute of Sport Sciences, the Association of Karate in Saxony-Anhalt state, the Karanostik GbR and the Department Occupational Medicine of the University in Magdeburg.
