To mark the European Day of Intergenerational Solidarity on 29 April and as a special commitment to the European Year 2012, the UK Department for Work and Pensions, the European Commission in the UK, and Age UK London jointly held an event as part of Spring Online award winning campaign which helps thousands of people learn about and use computers, the internet and other modern technology.
Launched in 2002 during which 40 events were held, close to 2,000 Spring Online digital taster events were held across the UK over the course of a week in 2012. The events took place in a wide variety of venues, such as libraries, community centres, schools and sheltered housing schemes, and were run by volunteers: individuals and organisations that are as passionate about digital technology and keen to make a difference in their communities.
Each year, the participation of the Spring Online event holders is celebrated with the Best Event Awards. This year the Awards Ceremony took place on 27 September 2012 at the BT Tower, London. Esther Rantzen CBE was welcomed as special guest to give out the awards and speak about how helping older people use and enjoy computers and the internet can help to reduce loneliness and social isolation.
Six organisations were shortlisted by the judges from the hundreds which took part, based on their originality, enthusiasm and the scope, reach and impact of their event:
Halton Housing Trust - Winner
Home Group - Joint Runner Up
Starting Point, Stockport - Joint Runner Up
Wigan & Leigh Housing - Highly Commended
Wealden Senior Citizens' Partnership - Highly Commended
DVLA Wales - Special Commendation for the Best Event Held by Government
