Through the use of various forms of communication, World Café Europe's aim is to provide opportunities for individuals to become active participants in conversations. In the context of EY2012, World Café Europe has launched the European Voices for Active Ageing (EVAA) project and is cooperating with 6 age-friendly European organisations to design and host large scale participatory dialogues. The EVAA project aims to give hundreds of adults aged 50+ a voice about active ageing in Europe by promoting forums to exchange views and discover new approaches to addressing key related issues.
In the context of EY2012, EVAA is also organising 6 thematic cafés in 6 European countries (Spain; Germany; Czech Republic; Great Britain; Italy; France) on 6 different active ageing topics: age-discrimination; age-friendly communities; civic engagement of adults aged 50+; the role of adults aged 50+ in social innovation; working after 50, and wellness & movement. Each Thematic Café will facilitate dialogue between individuals, companies and institutions and invite more than 100 stakeholders aged 50+ of different nationalities to actively participate in 4-hour dialogues. The ideas and suggestions from each thematic café will be collected, analysed and summarized in order to propose concrete policy recommendations to policy-makers at local, national and European level.
The first EVAA event took take place in Bilbao on 28 June with the partner organisation Innobasque, a Basque innovation agency. This Thematic Café on “Social Innovation and Role of 50+ Adults” initiated a series of events looking at the question of how citizens and decision-makers can come up with creative solutions for Basque society.
In Germany, the event will take place in Bonn on 10 September. This Thematic Café is being organized in conjunction with the Bundesarbeitsgemeinschaft Seniorenbüros (Federal Association of Senior Citizens’ Offices). The topic of this dialogue will be “Active Citizenship 50+”.
As a follow-up to the EVAA project, a Strategic Summit on Active Ageing is envisioned (date TBC). This interactive summit will use participatory dialogue to discuss the results of the EVAA project with diverse stakeholders from all over the European Union. A Europe-wide network will also be set up among those interested and involved to continue looking into these issues after the Thematic Cafés. Whatsmore, Innobasque plans to repeat the Thematic Café event another seven times during the course of the year.
