The European Year for Active Ageing and Solidarity between Generations offers an excellent opportunity to reflect on the situation of senior citizens and to initiate changes. Hence, the Ministry of Social Security and Labour of Lithuania has created a special working group integrated by representatives of NGOs, scientists, the media and relevant state institutions in order to analyse the participation of senior citizens in the labour market and the delivery of certain services (social, health) targeted to them.
Members of the group have highlighted the importance of age friendly environments, the participation in the labour market and volunteering activities for senior citizens. As mentioned by one of the members of the group, “sometimes not the big declarations, but a new small bench near to the house, makes the difference.”
The group has been gathered to work between June and October 2012 and find realistic ways to improve the situation of elderly people in the current economic environment, combining efforts and resources at various levels.
