In the context of the European Year for Active Ageing, the European Parliament Information Office in Greece, the Representation of the European Commission in Greece and Mediterranean SOS Network are co-organising actions such as “Be present! Safeguard the Future!” whose aim for 2012 is to motivate older generations to be more active and take part in providing solutions for local environmental problems.
By implementing a two-part initiative in May called “Be present! Safeguard the Future!”, senior citizens were first of all offered the opportunity to attend a participatory workshop and be informed and trained on matters related to the protection and management of the natural environment, with a focus on comprehensive coastal zone management.
One week later, they were then invited to participate in a Beach Clean Up action together with students, during which they had the opportunity of practically applying and transferring their “newly” acquired knowledge to younger generations by training them themselves, thus encouraging inter-generation communication and interaction on a common European issue, such as the protection of the environment.
The initiative was implemented with the support and collaboration of the Ellinikon-Argyroupolis Municipality.
