In the context of the European Year for Active Ageing and Solidarity between Generations, the “Meet Me Today for Tomorrow 2012” conference (Maribor, 28 - 31 October 2012) brought young people together to educate them on active ageing, so they could better understand it, live with it and make a positive contribution to society.
The conference was based on the philosophy that an educated youth population can change the world for the better, especially in regards to the elderly and active ageing. The youth conference promoted active ageing as growing old in good health and as a fully participative member of society. It helped increase awareness of how elderly people can feel more fulfilled in their jobs, more independent in their daily lives and more involved as citizens. It promoted the idea that, no matter how old a person is, they play an important role in society and deserve to enjoy a better quality of life. It also addressed the challenge of how to make the most of the enormous potential that elderly people harbour.
Orginised jointly by the Zavod PIP and Europe Direct Maribor, the conference consisted of lectures, workshops and social events. Participants were required to be from 18 to 27 years of age, and to be citizens of EU Member States and candidate or potential candidate countries. They were invited on the basis of their letters of interest.
