Life Course and Generations / Four Generations Meet

The Central Union for the Welfare of the Aged in Finland (Vanhustyön keskusliitto ry, Finland) is carrying out a research and practice development project called Life Course and Generations, during 2011 to 2013. The project aims to bring people of different ages together in order to increase intergenerational dialogue, promote older people’s psychosocial well-being and inclusion, and reduce their loneliness and exclusion.

The project will study how people of different ages understand the life course and their own place in the generational chain, as well as what they think about people who are older and younger than themselves. It will also campaign nationally throughout the year for intergenerational solidarity. This challenge campaign, called Four Generations Meet, will (1) initiate active public discussion about intergenerational relations and opportunities for collaborating together, and (2) promote intergenerational activities and communities.

As part of the campaign, the Life Course and Generations project will challenge relevant actors to develop and display intergenerational activities in the fields of culture, sports, and food. The focus themes will roll out sequentially: food in the spring, sports in the summer, and culture in the autumn. The actors challenged will include representatives from NGOs, daycare and senior centres, schools and other educational institutions, nursing homes, institutions of arts and culture, libraries, and enterprises, among others. Information on the intergenerational activities produced will be gathered into a national database to promote them further in the future.

Commitment

As a part of the European Year for Active Ageing and Solidarity between Generations 2012 the Life Course and Generations project will also give rise to three major national events to help promote the main themes of the year:

  • Four Generations’ Dinner on Valentine’s Day (February 14th);
  • Four Generations’ Carnival on the Day of Intergenerational Solidarity (April 29th; introducing different intergenerational practices);
  • Four Generations’ Culture (coinciding with the Week of the Elderly in early October).
