Financial manager (AD, CAST)

The EU takes decisions that affect the daily lives of some 500 million people in 27 EU countries.


EU financial managers work with very complex financial structures and closely support senior decision-makers by:

  • defining financial and budget procedures
  • preparing annual reports and accounts
  • assisting with audits and inspections
  • managing organisational risk
  • supervising and mentoring colleagues


Contract staff may also be employed to carry out some finance tasks.

 

Qualifications (indicative)

You must have:

  • a good command of at least 2 European languages (one of which must be English, French or German)
  • an appropriate degree (or be graduating this year) for entry at Grade AD 5
  • several years’ relevant experience, to join us at a more senior level (Grade AD 7).

Requirements may vary for contract staff.

 

Selection procedure – permanent contracts

After you have applied online, we will invite you to take a multiple-choice test of your verbal, numerical and abstract reasoning and situational judgment.
If you pass, you will be invited to an assessment centre in Brussels [not in the case of contract staff – see Contract staff selection]where we can meet you and find out more about your skills in:

  • analysis and problem-solving
  • communication
  • delivery quality and results
  • learning and development skills
  • prioritising and organising
  • resilience
  • working with others
  • leadership.

These will be assessed on the basis of case studies, group exercises, oral presentations and structured interviews.

Financial management/accounting assistant (AST, CAST)

The duties of financial management/accounting assistants include using specific IT tools (such as the integrated system of accounts) to help with:

  • the implementation of accounting and financial systems
  • keeping financial and/or budget accounts
  • designing, drawing up and implementing Financial Regulation procedures
  • drawing up budget estimates and annual reports / accounts
  • cosing accounts and presenting financial statements
  • planning and managing public procurement procedures
  • carrying out financial and operational management of contracts or subsidies
  • participating in cash management and/or imprest accounts and bank reconciliation
  • monitoring financial and budget procedures
  • supervising accounting methods and the financial management of revenue.

Contract staff may also be employed to carry out some finance and accounting tasks.

 

Qualifications (indicative)

You must have:

  • a good command of at least 2 European languages (one of which must be English, French or German)
  • either:
    - post-secondary education in finance or accounting and at least 3 years' professional experience in the field, or
    - secondary education and at least 6 years' professional experience in finance or accounting.

The requirements for contract staff may vary.
