The “European Competition” is run annually in more than 10 European countries. In Germany, it is the oldest and one of the best renowned student competitions. Its current motto follows the theme of the “European Year” - 2013 it is the European Year of Citizens: “We are Europe! Let’s take part!”
The German “European Competition” recently started a cooperation with the eTwinning network and now for the first time offers an online competition. Successful project teams will be awarded prizes worth 4.000 euros in total. Like in the traditional competition, schools can choose between different topics relating to the European Year of Citizens. The tasks have been developed for different age groups. Using digital media, however, makes a difference for the cooperating schools: it offers teachers a new way of bringing the European dimension into the classroom, by creating a joint product with European partner schools. eTwinning is the largest community of teachers in Europe and offers them many collaborative tools, including a secure virtual workspace called TwinSpace, where teachers and students can work together on their joint contributions to the competition. Teachers are free to decide whether they want to use individual parts or all of the steps described in the project kits. They provide practical solutions for implementing an online project and for working collaboratively on the themes of the competition.
