100 Yrs after the First World War: Conflicts in and around Europe – Can Citizenship Education contribute to conflict management? | Vienna (Austria)

Conference | Vienna (Austria) This year’s NECE (Networking European Citizenship Education) Conference will discuss the legacy of the First World War and turn towards questions of recent conflicts and the potential of citizenship education in conflict management and reconciliation processes.

Although the European Union is a unique association of countries offering many opportunities and possibilities, crises within and between EU member states are common, just as they are in regions that border on the bloc. Populist and nationalist resentments continue to pose a threat to Europe’s democratic constitution, although lessons learned from the First World War and other European conflicts have taught us that it desperately needs to be preserved. Against this backdrop, experts and practitioners in citizenship education will approach and discuss crisis and conflict intervention measures that can be connected from this historic starting point to current conflicts, conflict management and reconciliation today. Furthermore, NECE will elaborate questions of weather citizenship education can help to solve or even prevent conflicts and frictions not only at local and national levels, but also across borders. Therefore, the Vienna conference will offer the possibility to actively participate in numerous parallel workshops, which target amongst other the following aspects: - The role of dialogue and diversity in conflict resolution - Multiple identities – conflicting identities? - Rising conflicts in changing democracies and how to deal with populism - Conflicting ideas of Europe: The role of values in citizenship education - The impact of competing memories and memorial cultures - How to teach about conflicts and power structures? - Citizenship education in conflict regions - mission impossible? Conference language: English
