Open Forum - bEUcitzen - Barriers Toward EU Citizenship | Utrecht (Netherlands)

2013 has been proclaimed by the European Commission as the ‘Year of European Citizenship’, as it is 20 years after the EU introduced that concept with the Treaty of Maastricht.

2013 is also the year, in which the same European Commission awarded a consortium of 26 institutes in 19 different countries across Europe, coordinated by Utrecht University, a major research grant to carry out a 4-year research project studying the impediments to the realization of EU citizenship rights: bEUcitizen. On Wednesday 18 September, the bEUcitizen project will be officially launched during a kick-off conference in Utrecht. In the evening, from 20.00 to 22.00, an ‘Open Forum Discussion’ will take place. During the Open Forum the European Commission will present the EU Citizenship Report 2013. In this report the Commission presents ‘twelve new actions in six key areas to further remove obstacles standing in the way of citizens’ enjoyment of their EU rights’. Eminent scholars including Professor Philippe Van Parijs, who is professor at the University of Louvain (UCL) and Hoover Chair of economic and social ethics, commenting on the ‘EU Citizenship Report 2013’, will comment on the report.

When: Wednesday 18 September, 20.00 Where: Senaatszaal, Academiegebouw Universiteit Utrecht, Domplein 29, Utrecht
