On Monday 6 May 2013, the annual European Road Safety Day conference will be held in Brussels. | Brussels (Belgium)

The European Road Safety Day, organised by the European Commission in Brussels, is an EU contribution to the UN Global Road Safety Week.

Its topic is "Pedestrian safety in urban areas". As Europe's cities grow, the challenges to pedestrian safety increase. Around 70% of all pedestrians killed in road accidents in the EU are killed inside urban areas.

The risks, responsibilities and ways to increase road safety will be discussed in a full-day conference in the Borschette conference centre.

The conference will be opened by Commission Vice-President for Transport, Mr Siim Kallas together with the event keynote speaker, MEP Isabelle Durant, Vice-President of the European Parliament

The day will end with a road safety demonstration called "the long short walk". Together with Vice-President Kallas, participants will walk from the Schuman roundabout in the European quarter of Brussels to a road safety exhibition in the Cinquantenaire park. The conference and the walk are open to the public.
