Waves of Democracy – beyond borders

Throughout the first week of July, over 200 young people from 24 different countries visited historic Danish city Sønderborg in Jutland to participate in an academy called: ‘Waves of Democracy – beyond borders’. The Summer Academy aims to provide an international platform for dialogue, exchange and networking between young people from the region and other parts of Europe to discuss challenges and find solutions for Europe in the 21st century – in the wake of projects like Waves of Democracy.

Two workshops were dedicated to themes very closely related to the European Year of Citizens 2013. One workshop was called: Participatory Citizenship and Civil Dialogue – and was described like this:

“It is crucial that democracy is founded on permanent dialogues involving individuals, NGOs and institutions at the local, national and European levels in order to reshape the European project towards its social and democratic pillars – and not only the economic one. How can citizens’ voices (beyond voting) be included and strengthened as stakeholders in participatory decision-making in the face of current European challenges?”

The other relevant workshop was called ’Inclusive Citizenship’ and was described like this: “Inclusive citizenship is a governing policy directed at giving all citizens a strong feeling that they are a part of the overall society. Inclusive citizenship policies include laws that provide non-segregated access to all citizens, regardless of their race, gender, religious affiliation and socio-economic status. In Europe today not everybody feels included or accepted, and this might create social unrest. How can a more chohesive society/community be established at the national, regional and European level?”
