Conference: Are Roma people European citizens like any others?”

The European Roma Information Office (ERIO) invites you to attend the conference “European Year of Citizens: Are Roma people European citizens like any others?” which will be held on 22 April from 09:00-17:30 in the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC), Room VM3, (2nd floor, Van Maerlant Building, 2 rue Van Maerlant, 1040 Brussels).

2013 was declared as the European Year of Citizens. EU citizenship entails several rights such as the right to “move and reside freely within the EU”, “vote for and stand as a candidate in European Parliament and municipal elections” and so on. Within the context of the European Year of Citizens, this conference aims to address the extent Roma are able to exercise their rights as EU citizens and the barriers they face in accessing them.

The rights that come with EU citizenship are not so straight forward when it comes to Roma. It is important thus to discuss how to overcome barriers faced by Roma and how Europe can become a place where its citizens have a sense of belonging.

The conference will be held in English.
