Open Day at the Commission's Joint Research Centre. Laboratories will be open with hands-on activities, events and science-oriented presentations together with live experiments that visitors can take part in.
The European Commission's Joint Research Centre (JRC) in Ispra will dedicate its annual Open Day (12/05/07) to the 50th anniversary of the Treaty of Rome. Laboratories will be open with hands-on activities for kids. Topical presentations will take place together with experiments and demonstrations.
The JRC in Ispra conducts studies on a wide range of topics, from volcanic activity through to air pollution and food safety.
Other JRC institutes, Commission services and European organisations based in Italy will attend the Open Day with exhibitions of their different activities. 3,000 - 5,000 visitors are expected with a high percentage being children and students. In advance of the event, a competition will be held for schools in Rome with the winning class being awarded a trip to the event.
A conference will take place on the day before the Open Day (11/05/07) and will be attended by special guests including Nobel Prize Winners, EU Commissioners, Italian Ministers and others.
