Classical Concert - "A Night in Europe"

On Saturday 24th March (the eve of the 50th anniversary itself), the EU mission (delegation) to Uruguay and the German embassy organised a concert entitled Una Noche en Europa (A Night in Europe) at Montevideo's recently renovated Solís theatre, with extensive publicity in the local media and by the theatre itself.

Organised jointly by the EU mission and Germany, the country currently holding the bloc's rotating presidency, Una Noche en Europa was opened by German Ambassador Volker Anding and mission chief William Hanna. They were joined by the mayor of Montevideo, Ricardo Ehrlich.

Following this introduction, the Montevideo Philharmonic Orchestra took the stage, launching into stirring renditions of the Uruguayan and European anthems followed by a series of waltzes and other opuses by Brahms and Johann and Josef Strauss. The performance was accompanied by top dancers from the Ballet del SODRE (Uruguay's radio, TV and arts council) and actors from the Compañía Teatral Italia Fausta (Italia Fausta Theatrical Company) dressed in traditional 19th century European costumes.
