The councils of both cities have decided to team up for this cross-border infrastructure project. The initiative – funded by the ERDF’s INTERREG Romania-Bulgaria programme – aims to improve the Pan-European transport corridor to the benefit of both Giurgiu and Ruse.

The project will fund improvements leading to better waterway transport safety. This will ensure that the region is well-connected to both the EU and Asia, considering the pivotal location this transport corridor occupies - connecting the Rhine to Eastern Europe and towards Asia.

In Ruse, funds will be spent on revamping the quays in the passenger terminal and improving the three existing ship berths. Giurgiu intends to build infrastructure facilities, including a quay, port, docking platforms and wharves.

The ERDF will provide EUR 2.3 million to Giurgiu for the project, amounting to 85 % of its total costs.
